Petunia is genus of 35 flowering plants of South American origin in the family Solanaceae. The popular flower of the same name derived its epithet from the French, which took the word petun, meaning "tobacco," because they are closely related to it, as well as tomatoes, potatoes and chilli peppers, among others. Petunias can tolerate relatively harsh conditions and hot climates. They grow well in low humidity, moist soil, but need at least five hours of sunlight every day and to be watered once every two to five days.
